What We Test

The science behind every result.

Compliance testing for the state's regulated market, and R&D and custom analytical work for product development.

The Panel

What we test for

Every test in this panel is on our ISO/IEC 17025:2017 scope of accreditation.

Pesticides

Every pesticide the state currently requires, on two triple quadrupole mass spectrometers: liquid chromatography for most compounds and gas chromatography for those suited to it. Each compound is confirmed by its own ion transitions and retention time, and quantified using isotope-labeled internal standards.

LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS
Heavy metals

Arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. Each sample is digested with acid in sealed vessels in a microwave system, then measured at trace levels by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Each metal has its own state action level.

ICP-MS
Residual solvents

Solvents and processing chemicals that can remain after extraction and processing, such as butane, propane, ethanol, hexane and benzene. The sample is dissolved and sealed in a vial, only the vapor above it is injected, and each compound is held to the state's limit for that compound and product type.

GC-MS
Mycotoxins

Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2 and ochratoxin A, toxins produced by certain molds. Each is measured by LC-MS/MS and confirmed by its own ion transitions, and the four aflatoxins are judged together as a total.

LC-MS/MS
Microbial contaminants

Four Aspergillus species (A. flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger and A. terreus), Salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. After an enrichment step on a 1-gram portion, real-time PCR detects DNA targets specific to each organism. The Aspergillus limits apply to inhalable products.

qPCR
Terpenes

The terpene profile behind aroma and flavor: the major and most common terpenes, including beta-myrcene, D-limonene, beta-caryophyllene, alpha-humulene, linalool, alpha- and beta-pinene, terpinolene, ocimene, nerolidol and guaiol, among others. An extract is sealed in a vial and heated, only the vapor above it is injected, and each terpene is identified by its ions and retention time and measured against an internal standard.

GC-MS
Potency

The major potency compounds in both their acid and neutral forms, measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection. For dried flower and non-infused pre-rolls we run the method the state requires, verified in our lab before first use; for other products, our own validated method.

HPLC-DAD
Water activity and moisture

Moisture content is the percentage of water in a sample by weight, determined by loss on drying. Water activity shows how much of that water is free for mold and microbes to use. The state sets a water activity limit for dried flower, including pre-rolls, and for solid edibles.

Water activity meter and moisture analyzer
Foreign material

Every compliance sample is inspected as received, before any of it is homogenized or sub-sampled, for hair, insect fragments, sand, soil, mold and other foreign matter. Dried flower is examined inside and out; other products are examined on every outer surface.

Two Ways To Test

Compliance, or R&D

Compliance testing

For products headed to the regulated market.

  • The full panel the state requires, with the limits for your product type
  • Pass or fail against the state's limits on the certificate of analysis
  • Certificate of analysis uploaded to the state's track-and-trace system and sent to the state before results are released

R&D (QA) and custom projects

For product development and questions outside the standard panel.

  • The same instruments, calibration and batch quality control
  • Individual tests or a custom set
  • Talk to us about your sample and what you need to know
In Research

What we are working on

Methods we are developing. They are not yet on our scope of accreditation.

Hop latent viroid (HLVd)

We are developing detection of hop latent viroid by RT-qPCR in root, leaf and stem tissue, from soil and hydroponic grows. Infections are often latent: plants can carry the viroid and pass it on through cuttings and tools without showing symptoms. The root is usually where the viroid shows up first, which makes it the best tissue for early detection.

About the project

Peptides

Method development for peptide analysis.

What we take in

Plant material, concentrates, edibles, topicals, beverages and more. Not sure which tests your product needs? We will help you choose the tests that apply.

Compliance samples

Collected at licensed premises anywhere in California by our own qualified samplers, under our sampling procedure, SOP 002.1, and brought to the laboratory by our team under chain of custody.

R&D samples

Picked up by our team or delivered by a licensed distributor.
